The article examines forms of speech effect on a recipient in Business English discourse. The authors strive for developing
students‟ communicative competence taking into account G.P. Grice's Cooperative Principle and pragmatic-oriented
classification of types of communication (mentoring, inspiring, confrontational, informative ones). Besides, it is important to
distinguish between speech effect (the influence of which the addressee is aware) and manipulation (of which the addressee is unaware).

The research material comprises samples of oral (an Oxford Union Society debate) and written (a business plan) business discourse available online. The authors argue that efficient impact on a recipient may be achieved in different ways, the main thing being a systemic discourse build-up towards realization of the speaker‟s communicative purport.

In conclusion a number of findings are stated: 1) a pragmatic impact on the recipient is very important in business communication due to its orientation towards affirming the speaker's own position and inciting the desirable reaction from the partner; 2) different samples of business discourse invariably contain the “inspiring” impact, i.e. the one stimulating people to enhance this or that activity; 3) studying Business English rhetoric and stylistics future professionals learn how to recognize the language elements, text structural features, stylistic and rhetoric devices, which jointly influence business discourse pragmatic effect.
