THE STRATEGY OF TEACHING THE SKILL OF SUMMARIZING A TEXT

The article gives one of the definitions of summarizing and considers the notions comprising all definitions of summarizing such as analyzing, processing, structuring and succinct, logical and consistent presenting information and the role of this skill in teaching English. The skill helps students to practise their active vocabulary and enrich their vocabulary in general by using synonyms while teachers can easily assess their students‟ various language competences.     

The author gives requirements for summarizing a text. They are objective presentation of information, the change of the original language and style, which rules out copying a text, the use of linking words and word combinations that make your presentation coherent and logical, the possibility to present facts in your own order, the use of  present tenses with a summarized text being no more than 30% - 40% of the original text. The author stresses the difference between oral and written summarizing a text, which mainly refers to the form of presenting information. 

The article gives detailed instructions which are necessary for doing the task. Moreover, there are examples of exercises based on the main methodological principle ”from simple ones to difficult ones” and recommended teaching methods which will help teachers develop the skill in their students and work out  the right execution algorithm when summarizing any text.

The article analyzes the application of the skill of summarizing a text.
