TOWARDS THE AGENDA OF ENGLISH (L2) ACADEMIC WRITING TEACHING AT RUSSIAN UNIVERSITIES: CULTURAL ASPECT
This paper addresses the issue of teaching English academic writing at the university level in Russia. The article reviews the research literature dedicated to the problem of the differences in the culture of English (L2) writing teaching and learning both in Russian and in Western countries; it then goes on to touch upon the difference in rhetoric of writing in English and in Russian. The issue of students’ self-regulation of writing is also explored in the paper as an aspect of the methodological culture of teaching English. Drawing on the study conducted at the School of International Relations of St. Petersburg State University, conclusions are formulated on the necessity to explicitly develop Russian students’ writing competences. It is also considered vital to take into account the methodological culture of teaching English L2 writing (with special attention to the problem of students’ self-regulation of L2 writing), which has developed in western countries and, due to various reasons, was neglected in the context of the System of Russian Higher Education.
