American presidents’ inaugural addresses: topoi
In the given research the American presidents’ inaugural addresses texts have been analysed with the aim of defining topoi which are common themes in these texts. Given a long-lasting history in the country and a traditional character in the American presidential rhetoric, inaugural addresses have huge research potential. The inaugural addresses texts contain themes which formulated by presidents, reiterated by them regularly and become part of the political culture of the country. In the given research several common themes or topoi have been distinguished which are typical of American presidents’ inaugural addresses texts: addressing the country’s original ideals and truths, establishing responsibility to next generations, cherishing an American people, strengthening unity in the country, conducting renewal processes in the country. The results of the present research allow firstly, understanding how the inaugural addresses texts are organized, secondly, working out how the inaugural addresses texts are structured, thirdly, realising how the American history course is presented in the inaugural addresses texts, fourthly, figuring out how the topoi formulations impact both the people and the culture. The given research materials are of interest to linguists, specialists who are engaged in investigating public speaking and the art of oratory, political science researchers.
