THE ROLE OF AUDIOVISUAL MATERIAL IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING AT NON-LINGUISTIC UNIVERSITY

The article presents the potential of audiovisual tutorials in creation of the language environment in a foreign language classroom in modern universities and takes into consideration the  advantages and difficulties of their usage  in educational process. 

Audiovisual tutorials are considered as the manuals intended for creation of the foreign-language environment and stimulation of speech activity of students based on visual, acoustical or visual and acoustical perception of information. Classification of audiovisual means is carried out, advantages of work with each of them are revealed, the expediency of application of a particular means is estimated. The article also presents some web sites that can help to design and use  audiovisual tools in educational process to make it more effective. 

The conclusions state that audiovisual means approved to be irreplaceable instruments of quality improvement in the process of foreign language teaching at non-linguistic higher educational establishments. It happened thanks to brightness, expressiveness and the information saturation of the visual and acoustical images which recreate the situations of communication and introduce students to the linguistic culture of the target-language country. The increase of students' motivation to study foreign languages was noticed. Moreover, the systematic application of audiovisual means allows to make up for the lack of a language environment at all grade levels. 

Besides, the foreign language study at universities will be more productive and effective and will create an enabling environment in formation of communicative competence at complex use of audiovisual tools in combination with the specially designed tutorials and also the websites recommended in the article.
