The purpose of the study is to determine the main categories, or conceptual spheres, that are the basis for the formation of legal metaphor-based terms in the Old English language. The paper focuses on four main categories which include religion, family, offense and legal liability, land ownership, and, accordingly, metaphorical legal terms belonging to them. The scientific novelty of the study lies in a comprehensive analysis of legal metaphor-based terms of the Old English language from the point of view of the expression plane and the content plane, as well as in the consideration of the semantics of the discovered lexical units. As a result of the study, it has been found that at this stage already terminological units are characterized by diversity from the point of view of spelling as well as by the presence of synonymy, antonymy and polysemy, and the semantics of the analyzed terms demonstrates a high degree of development of certain areas of legal relations in the Anglo-Saxon society.
