Euphemisms and dysphemisms on the “Gypsy” theme in the German press
Euphemisms and dysphemisms on the “Gypsy” theme in the German press
The study focuses on identifying euphemistic and tabooed vocabulary in online media about German Sinti and Roma. It also analyzes politically correct words proposed by the new association of German journalists, the Alliance 90/The Greens, and the authoritative digital dictionaries of the German language, DWDS and Duden. The material was a corpus of 150 articles, based on which 21 euphemistically colored lexemes and 3 dysphemisms were identified for the period of 2020-2025. The relevance of the study is due to the fact that the increasing role of national minorities in German society contributes to the expansion of the list of politically correct language units. The novelty of the study lies in the fact that no comparative analysis of politically correct euphemistic ethnic vocabulary and dysphemisms has been conducted in Russian German studies. It has been shown that discriminatory marked dysphemisms are used by the authors of articles in quotations from Zigeuner Handlesen (Gypsy fortune-telling), in texts dedicated to the historical events of National Socialism that were tragic for the ethnic minority, such as the Zigeunerpolizeistelle (Gypsy police station), or in publications by the DWDS corpus before 2005, when the Feindschaft zwischen Zigeunern und Rumänen (enmity between Gypsies and Romanians) was created. It has been established that journalists construct the image of the Roma people by using recommended politically correct euphemisms, as well as by resorting to periphrases based on the principle of “people first.” The results obtained clarify and expand the list of self-nominations of the German Sinti and Roma, and demonstrate their significance for the analysis of racial and ethnic discourse.
