In this paper, the author shares her experience of teaching English for Specific Purposes to second-year students at Engineering Physics University. It is shown that reading, translation and discussion of professionally oriented English texts, doing grammar exercises and discussions of environmental issues concerning nuclear energy, radiation protection and sustainability contribute to the acquisition of technical vocabulary and formation of professional competence of future specialists in nuclear physics. It is mentioned that making presentations, doing listening tasks and roleplaying help to develop communicative, listening and socio-cultural skills. As the author marks, students usually dedicate their presentations and reports to such issues as the pros and cons of nuclear energy and alternative sources of energy (wind, water, solar, tidal and ocean thermal energy); uranium mining and its enrichment; transportation of radioactive substances, spent fuel utilization; radioisotopes and nuclear medicine; safety at nuclear power plants etc. It is concluded that thanks to different approaches in teaching students motivation has increased.
