WORD-BUILDING PATTERNS OF ENGLISH BUSINESS NEOLOGISMS (BASED ON THE WEB-SITE WORDSPY.COM)

The article discusses the concept of "neologism", its characteristics and classifications, as well as word-building patterns of English neologisms in business sphere. 55 English business neologisms are analyzed on the materials of constantly updating web-site of new words WordSpy.com. As follows from the analysis, the most frequent word-building patterns of English neologisms in business include compounding, word-clipping, conversion and affixation. The study finds that the dominant category is compounding, and the most frequent model is Noun + Noun = Noun; in addition, other models are found, such as Noun + Preposition = Noun, Adjective + Noun = Noun, Verb + Object = Verb. On the second place is word-clipping, among which there are cases of one, two, or both components being clipped in the process of merger of two or three words. Examples of blending and abbreviation are also found. In addition, there are idioms as neologisms, taking third place. On the fourth place there is conversion, including models Adjective -> Noun and Noun -> Verb. The smallest categories are affixation, particularly suffixing, and combination of the categories of affixation and word-clipping. Finally, it is concluded that the method of compounding is the most frequent and productive for business English neologisms.
